Summer Taster Workshops 


Try some summer Art! These introductions to various media  and techniques will be held on selected Saturdays during July and August. It’s an ideal way to try a medium or get yourself back into art if you’ve had a break. The sessions are:


Introduction to Oils Saturday July 27th at 10am-1pm. With Genevieve Loxton.

This is a comprehensive introduction to one of the most popular and versatile mediums, steeped in 600 years of tradition but used in innovative ways by the contemporary artists of today. Fun and informative. Suitable for beginners and improvers. £45 including materials. 


Introduction to Textile Art Saturday Aug 3rd 10am-1pm with Karen O’Shea.

A fantastic foray into the creative world of fabrics, stitch and mixed materials to make distinctive artworks full of colour, texture and meaning. £45 including most materials but feel free to bring a scrap bag of favourite fabrics, threads etc, and a textural image or photo that inspires you.


Ways into Abstraction Saturday August 10th 1.30-4.30pm with Petra Couper.

Taking inspiration from the Abstract Expressionists and the work of Barnett Newman, this is an opportunity to create bold and striking abstracts. Discover how to make Newman’s ‘zips’ and play with colour. 



 Mixed Media Contemporary Abstraction Saturday August 24th 1.30-4.30pm. With Petra Couper £45.

Build your confidence in approaching abstraction through acrylic paint and collage. Explore the process of layering painting with paper inspired by the vibrant and exciting work of British artist Barbara Rae RA

Tuesday Drawing (choose morning or afternoon classes.)

Tuesdays are mixed ability groups ideal for beginners and improvers,  tuition covers a range of media and establishes sound principles of classic and contemporary technique

Tuesday September 10th- Tuesday October 22nd 7 weeks  £91 either 10am-12pm or 2pm-4pm

Saturday Morning Drawing Group 10.30am-12.30pm ideal for any age from 13 upwards (mostly includes adults) this is the only pay as you go course we offer, at £15 per 2 hour class, but there is a minimum attendance of three weeks, and we recommend you attend most weeks to gain maximum benefit. If you book for the term there is a reduction to £13 per week.

Figure (Life) Drawing

 Did you know that drawing the human form is possibly the fastest way to make your work more accurate!  Course cost includes drawing materials and professional model fee: £120 for four sessions. Watercolours 

with Kate Lowry Weds 10am-12pm for beginners to intermediate £90

Such a popular medium, learn to create vibrant paintings full of light with Kater Lowry, artist and former head conservator at the National Museum and Gallery Cardiff. Materials are not included, we can advise on what you will need and keep stocks in the Workshop for students at reasonable prices.

Textile Art 

 With Karen O'Shea. This course allows you to experiment with fabrics and a mix of media to create inspired art and textile pieces. Through deconstruction, reconstruction, stitch, painting, drawing, dyeing, and embroidery you will challenge yourself to explore the world of Textile Art.

Oil Painting

Learn all about this versatile medium, the favourite of professional painters.  This course takes you through a structured approach to handling materials, becoming expressive with paint  and understanding colour theory. Includes relevant art history and appreciation.

Experimental Acrylics

With Petra Couper A creative exploration of this versatile paint medium incorporating contemporary techniques. Suitable for beginners and the more experienced.  10am-12.30pm every Monday during term time.

Printmaking: Collagraph, Linocuts and Monoprint

 with  Artist tutor Jackie Shackson. Create beautiful images using artists quality materials, and come away with a series of handmade prints of your own design. £45 including materials and use of the press.  Selected Saturdays,  see dates below. Three hour workshops from 1.15pm-4.15pm. Suitable for beginners and Improvers. 

Collagraph printmaking is a versatile, sensitive pint form where you can transform your designs into beautiful handmade prints, built from an etched plate with collage additions to create incredible texture and tone.

Linocuts is the modern form of woodblock engraving, but forget that tough old lino from your schooldays! Try carving into artist's quality lino which is smooth and easy, and create powerful; images with high contrast.

Monoprinting. the most painterly method among printmaking techniques, essentially a printed painting, and no two prints are alike. A sponaneous form of pintmaking combining drawing and painting media.

Drypoint  learn the engravers skills in this wonderful form of etching to produce accurate detail and expressive marks

For Children

Junior Art Academy is an hour of inspiring and fun fine art tuition with our team of qualified art teachers. Coose either Mondays 4-5pm, Thursdays 4-5pm or Saturdays 9am-10am. Reserve your places now for Academy classes with tutors Petra Couper and Nicole Smith. Learn exciting techiques, drawing, painting, 3D and Art History, and explore a whole range of media. Develop sketchbook skills. Your child can attend a trial session for just £10.

Art for the Holidays
 
During Half terms and holidays the Art Workshop runs Creative Kids sessions for children between the ages of 7 and 13. These are open to all daily and are fun but well structured workshops where children learn through drawing games and creativity exercises as well as completing a finished piece in a range of media. They can experiment with appropriate materials and produce a portfolio of work to take home with the help of our team of tutors.  Fees £18 including all materials.

Summer Holiday Workshops with Hollie Roberts and the Team. Tues 30th July, Wed 31st July, Thurs 1st August, Friday 2nd August.   Tues 6th August, Weds 7th August Thursday 8th August Friday 9th August. 10am - 1pm. £18.
